Our answer
Shortlist the Meaco DD8L Pro if you value digital humidity control, app access and published mode-specific extraction. Choose the EcoAir DD1 Simple MK3 for simpler controls and a lighter body; consider the DD128 for its 2.2 L tank and electronic functions. In a heated room, compare a compressor model first.
Three current models compared
| Model | Extraction at 20°C/60% RH | Stated power | Tank / weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meaco DD8L Pro | 2.12 / 5.40 / 7.97 L/day by fan setting | 231 / 437 / 623 W at that condition | 2 L / 8.7 kg |
| EcoAir DD1 Simple MK3 | Maximum 7.5 L/day; low-mode output not stated | 300 W low / 580 W high | 2 L / 6 kg |
| EcoAir DD128 | Maximum 8 L/day; low-mode output not stated | 331 W low / 623 W high | 2.2 L / 6.1 kg |
All three manufacturers identify 20°C/60% RH for the headline extraction figure, but EcoAir does not provide a full mode-by-mode extraction/power pair. The table supports a conditional shortlist, not an efficiency league table.
Our choice for control and colder-room evidence
The DD8L Pro is the strongest research candidate for someone who wants to set and monitor humidity rather than turn a dial. Its app, three fan settings and adjustable laundry routine offer flexibility. Meaco publishes 10°C/60% RH data: high mode is 6.89 L/day at 630 W. That helps show how the machine behaves in cooler air, although it is still manufacturer data.
Its lowest setting is not a cheap way to obtain the full advertised 8 litres/day. At 20°C/60% RH, that setting is quoted at 2.12 L/day and 231 W. Use the output and wattage from the same row when comparing options.
Our choice for simple operation
The DD1 Simple MK3 uses a rotary humidity dial and a low/high selection. Its 6 kg body is lighter than the DD8L Pro, which may matter if you move it between rooms. The trade-off is less precise visibility of your target and less sophisticated scheduling. If you prefer an appliance with fewer controls, this is a practical reason to choose it rather than assume a newer smart machine is better.
When to consider the DD128
The DD128 adds electronic functions, a louvre and a slightly larger 2.2 L tank. Its manufacturer-stated 8 L/day maximum is close to the DD8L Pro’s high-mode figure at 20°C/60% RH. A difference of a few hundred millilitres in a specification table does not establish which will dry your clothes first. Compare control layout, tank access and the full DD8L Pro vs DD128 assessment.
What desiccant operation costs
| Worked example | Six active hours at 26.32p/kWh |
|---|---|
| DD8L Pro low, 231 W | 36.5p |
| DD8L Pro high, 623 W | 98.4p |
| DD1 Simple low, 300 W | 47.4p |
| DD1 Simple high, 580 W | 91.6p |
| DD128 low, 331 W | 52.3p |
These are constant-power scenarios. They exclude cycling, standby and any heating benefit. The warm exhaust can be welcome in winter, but it does not make electricity free. Use the calculator to estimate your routine rather than multiplying the lowest wattage by the highest extraction figure.
When desiccant is the wrong purchase
A normally heated living room with daily condensation is often a good starting case for a compressor machine. At 20°C/60% RH the Arete Two 20L is quoted at 8.50 L/day and 207 W. That combination is quite different from the desiccants above. In a cold utility space, available extraction and useful warmth may matter more than watts alone. The room temperature, moisture load and safe operating instructions should decide the technology.
Installation and maintenance
Desiccants contain a heater and need their cooling cycle to finish before disconnection. The DD8L Pro manual requires its cable tidy to be fitted; EcoAir specifies clearance around its machines and cautions against unattended laundry operation. Keep filters clean, prevent drips onto the appliance and do not use an external smart plug to cut power during cooldown.
