Our answer
Around 40–60% relative humidity is a useful household monitoring reference. Aim for a stable, comfortable pattern and address the sources of excessive moisture. A room reading inside that band does not rule out condensation or mould on a colder surface.
What relative humidity means
RH is a percentage describing how close air is to saturation at its current temperature. The same amount of water vapour can give a higher RH when air cools and a lower RH when it warms. Record temperature beside the reading rather than treating heating as proof that moisture has been removed.
Read duration as well as the number
| Pattern | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| Brief rise after a shower | Check that extraction works and the reading recovers. |
| High RH for hours each day | Review sources, ventilation and any building symptoms. |
| Ordinary room RH but wet window | Inspect the cold surface and local conditions; do not dismiss the symptom. |
| Very low readings after heating | Check meter placement and the broader pattern before using more dehumidification. |
Where to measure
Use a representative position away from direct sun, a radiator or dry outlet air. A single sensor can miss a local corner problem, so document where each reading comes from. An instrument’s comfort icon is a manufacturer’s display choice, not a building survey.
Choosing a dehumidifier target
Around 50–55% RH can be a reasonable starting target when excess moisture needs managing, but review the outcome in your room. Setting 40% just because the machine allows it can prolong runtime without resolving a leak or very cold wall. Laundry Mode has a different purpose from maintaining an occupied room.
When the cause needs attention
Persistent mould, water staining or damp returning after basic moisture-control steps needs investigation. A dehumidifier cannot repair a leak or defective ventilation. People renting should report these symptoms promptly; the responsibility to address building defects is not transferred by selling the occupant an appliance.
