Our answer
A quoted dB figure is only meaningful with its fan setting and test method. Night Mode can reduce lights, beeps and airflow but cannot guarantee undisturbed sleep. For light sleepers, dry the room before bedtime and check the exact instructions before any overnight operation.
The sounds you may hear
- Fan noise: airflow through the casing and filter.
- Compressor noise: a low mechanical sound on compressor models, with changes when active extraction starts or stops.
- Vibration: the machine, floor or nearby objects can transmit or amplify sound.
- Sampling and alerts: periodic checks, tank-full beeps and control-panel sounds vary by model.
Compare modes rather than the smallest number
Meaco states 35/38/44 dB(A) for the Arete Two 12L and 38/40/50 for the 20L. The quietest figures describe the lower settings, not the strongest laundry airflow. The OmniDry listing’s 36 dB figure does not include a directly equivalent test protocol, so we do not declare it quieter beside a bed.
Why two dB listings can mislead
Sound pressure depends on measurement distance and the room. Sound power is a different measurement. A dryer’s sound-power label and a dehumidifier’s sound-pressure listing are not directly comparable, even if both use dB(A). Frequency, vibration and cycling can also affect annoyance more than a small numerical difference.
Ways to reduce disturbance
Put the appliance level and stable as its manual requires, leave its airflow clear and move rattling objects away. Use the built-in low/nocturnal mode when suitable, but avoid soft coverings or makeshift enclosures that obstruct cooling. A pre-bedtime session may be more practical than keeping the unit beside the bed.
Unattended operation is a separate decision
Electrical Safety First advises against overnight or away-from-home use unless the manufacturer specifies it is safe. Pro Breeze’s linked OmniDry manual prohibits unattended operation. A low noise claim does not change that restriction. Check your exact model rather than assume all machines with a Night Mode have identical instructions.
