Our answer
For a heated bedroom, the Meaco Arete Two 12L is our first research shortlist choice: its low fan setting is quoted at 35 dB(A), it has a dark Night Mode and published extraction data for ordinary room conditions. Dry the room before bedtime if noise disturbs you. A quiet specification is not permission for unattended use.
Our bedroom shortlist
| Model | Best reason to consider it | Main reservation |
|---|---|---|
| Meaco Arete Two 12L | Heated room; 35/38/44 dB(A) stated for its three fan speeds; 2.5 L tank. | Compressor cycling can still disturb a light sleeper. |
| Meaco Arete Two 20L | Bedroom plus larger-home moisture workload; 4.8 L tank. | 38/40/50 dB(A); larger and heavier than the 12L. |
| EcoAir DD1 Simple MK3 | Cool room; straightforward controls and 34/47 dB(A) stated. | 300/580 W stated mode power; do not assume overnight operation is permitted. |
Why the Arete Two 12L leads this shortlist
The 12L strikes a sensible balance for an ordinary heated room. Meaco publishes 5.40 litres/day and 136 W at 20°C and 60% relative humidity, rather than only a maximum capacity label. That gives a useful baseline for a room with morning window condensation. A humidistat can stop active extraction when the target is reached; there is little reason to run Laundry Mode in an occupied bedroom simply to chase the lowest possible humidity.
Night Mode switches off the interface lights and reduces the fan from high to low when high speed is active. It does not remove the sound of the compressor, occasional sampling or vibration. We have not measured any of these machines beside a bed, so the shortlist is based on features and published figures rather than a sleep test.
When a different model makes sense
The 20L is worth considering if the same machine must handle substantial laundry or a larger connected living area during the day. A small bedroom alone does not justify it. In a genuinely cool room, a desiccant model may be more useful, but extra warmth and higher operating power are significant trade-offs. Compare the room’s actual temperature with the desiccant shortlist before changing technology.
Why we do not pick the OmniDry for overnight use
Pro Breeze advertises 36 dB for the OmniDry 20L. Its current product-linked PB-D-24-WF manual nevertheless instructs the user never to leave the appliance unattended. We therefore consider it for supervised daytime moisture control rather than recommend it for running while you sleep. A smart app, a timer and a tank shut-off do not override that instruction.
A bedroom routine that is easier to live with
- Measure temperature and RH away from the window, radiator and dehumidifier outlet. Note the morning reading and whether condensation appears.
- Ventilate appropriately and use bathroom/kitchen extraction. Investigate leaks, persistent mould or cold building surfaces.
- Run a suitable machine before bedtime while you are awake, following its installation clearances. Start with a sensible target around 50–55% RH and observe the result.
- Empty the tank before moving the machine. Keep the air path and cable clear of bedding and curtains.
- Check the exact manual before any overnight use. If its instructions prohibit unattended use, switch it off before sleeping.
How much will it cost?
At a worked-example tariff of 26.32p/kWh, 136 W for six continuous hours costs about 21.5p. That is a calculation, not a measured overnight bill. Humidistat cycling, temperature, humidity, fan speed and air-purification settings can change consumption. Use the running-cost calculator with your own tariff.
Does a low room reading guarantee no mould?
No. The humidity close to a cold window or external wall can be higher than at the meter. Persistent mould needs its underlying cause addressed. A dehumidifier also does not replace fresh air. Read our humidity guide alongside the shortlist.
